Gas Safety Law

In the UK, we have a gas safety law that aims to protect us from unsafe gas work. It requires anyone carrying out gas work in our homes or at work to be qualified and registered to do it. Gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. If they are not, and they work on gas, they are breaking the law.

The law is, The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

The gas safety law isn't just for engineers to follow; it places responsibilities on landlords and on us too. Landlords need to get their properties gas safety checked every year, and get appliances that they supply regularly serviced. As a tenant, if we bring appliances into a rented property, we have to make sure they are serviced and safe to use.

The gas safety law aims to protect us and we can all do our bit to make sure it works.

These actions can stop gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide caused by dangerous gas work.

Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register is the gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey. It is the only official list of engineers approved to work on gas fittings and appliances in your home.

Gas safety is one of the most important factors in having a safe home and work place. Make sure your gas appliances are properly fitted and well cared for, to prevent leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Anyone registered to work on gas will have a Gas Safe Register ID card. If they turn up at your door without a card, don't allow them to work on your gas appliances.

Check that the gas engineer you want to use is qualified to do the job. To do this find and check an engineer on the Gas Safe Register website or call 0800 408 5500.
