We are Gas Safe Charity, the UK's voice for gas safety. We
want to see an end to deaths, injuries and illness caused by
dangerous gas work and appliances. Our aim is for everyone to know
what to do to be safe with gas.
Carbon monoxide poisoning,
gas leaks, fires and explosions are all gas safety risks. They are
responsible for 18 deaths in the past year, and more than 300
injuries. This was the result of bad gas work and faulty or old
appliances.
A few simple actions, if we all do them, will improve gas safety
in the UK.
Our reason for being
Back in 2006, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
carried out a review of gas safety. They found that, while safety
was improving, there was no room for complacency because people
still had low awareness of gas and carbon monoxide risks. This led
to a new gas registration scheme being established in April 2009,
the Gas Safe Register. It also led to the
creation of the Gas Safe Charity in October 2009, established by
HSE and Gas Safe Register to promote and support gas safety in
order to advance health and save lives.
We intend to achieve this aim by providing education
in relation to gas safety and by promoting any purpose, that is
charitable, according to the laws of England and Wales, and which
furthers gas safety as determined by the Trustees. Our registered
number is 1131987.
Our mission is to put an end to deaths, injuries and illness
caused by dangerous gas work and faulty or poorly cared for gas
appliances in the home.
We exist to get things done. Through greater public awareness,
we aim to make a positive impact to improve levels of gas safety in
the UK. We are seeking support from energy suppliers, gas appliance
manufacturers and retailers and others involved in the gas sector.
Gas Safe Charity has so far received a £1.7 million donation from
Capita Group Plc, and Gas Safe
Register will make an annual donation of 1% of its
turnover.
Our vision
The future is Gas Safe. There are zero deaths, injuries and
illness caused by dangerous gas work and faulty or poorly cared for
appliances in the home.
We are committed to making this vision a reality.
