Research carried out for Gas Safe Register found that older
people, students and those who are sick and disabled might be more
vulnerable to dangerous gas work. This may be down to out of date
gas appliances, low standard accommodation and being victims of
illegal gas work. The Gas Safe Charity is currently looking at ways
to improve gas safety.
We are looking into the viability of a gas safety check, mend
and replace scheme for people who are vulnerable and in financial
hardship. We are also looking at ways to improve gas safety for
students. They are often living in low standard accommodation and
this puts them at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning. We are
exploring ways to help students get better informed about
gas safety, and will update you as our work progresses.
More people die, or are injured and ill due to carbon monoxide
poisoning compared to other gas safety risks such as leaks, fires
and explosions. To get a broader view on the affects of carbon
monoxide on public health, we commissioned Cranfield University to
carry out a review of existing research on the subject. You can read the in-depth report to get a better
understanding of the impact of exposure to carbon monoxide from gas
appliances in the UK.
